Hello, everybody! First, Gidon and I hope that everybody is staying home, staying healthy and staying safe during these unprecedented times.
Even as we were working on The True Adventures, I had a dream of creating a podcast series or audiobook from the material but studio time is costly and we could only do one thing at a time.
But when self-isolation became a fact of life, I decided to go down to the bomb shelter of our building and take a crack at recording some of the chapters using a borrowed mic and some downloaded software. It worked! Kind of!
But I knew that simply recording something doesn't mean that it's on a professional level and something that would do Gidon's story justice. I needed an expert in sound design. Well, it is a small but generous world. A friend of mine put me in touch with Vickie Sampson who just so happens to be a sound designer extraordinaire. In fact, she designed the sound to a few films you may have heard of, like The River, Speed, On Golden Pond, Ordinary People, The Pirates of the Caribbean and The Return of the Jedi.
I have been hard at work recording and Vickie has been so kind as to collaborate with Gidon and I to create a version of The True Adventures of Gidon Lev that will come alive as you listen. Anne-Marie O'Connor, the author of The Lady in Gold, will be narrating some poems and journal entries written by Susan, Gidon's late wife, Yossi Klein Halevi will be doing the voice work for some quotes from his books that I included, in the True Adventures, and Lewis Hyde, a writer I also quoted and love, is also adding his voice!
Gidon has been recorded singing and narrating some parts of his writing, too! There are a couple of actors I am hoping will also become involved, but for now, I'm already very excited to have been given this chance to bring the story of Gidon to the world in a really creative and collaborative way.
Gidon and I want to pay our super talented sound designer a fee that is fair, given her reputation and experience but like everybody, we are a little strapped. If you can, would you consider donating any amount to help fund the audio version of The True Adventures of Gidon Lev? Any amount is appreciated.
The print version of the book will be available in June, but the audio version will be available much sooner; perhaps a month or so, if all goes well. Below, I have a link to a recording of Gidon singing a song in German that he used to sing with his mother. It's pretty amazing.
